Abu ‘Āliyah (a first generation tāb’ī) hated for people to call a sūrah of the Qur`ān small or short. Whenever he would hear someone say this, he would reply, “You are smaller than it, as for the Qur`ān — all of it is Great” الجامع لأحكام القرآن — تفسير القرطبي 1/31…

Secrets and Scandals

September 24, 2012

[The Day secrets will be revealed] Tāriq:9 All those shameful things that you didn’t want people to know? That you hid from everyone? All of it will be out on public display.   There is a word for it in Arabic, Faḍīḥa(فضيحة): a shameful, scandalous exposé.  A shameful, scandalous exposé – in front of all those whom you held in high esteem.  Your parents, peers, loved ones, everyone.  And this is what the ṣālihūn feared so they fixed their private life before it was too late. Spiritual Impairment

September 16, 2012

The blindness to be sought refuge in Allah from is not a physical impairment. Rather it is a spiritual one. It is the blindness of the heart. The blindness that prevents the Nūr of guidance reaching the heart. What use is seeing if their blind hearts are prevented from recognising the Truth?    [For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the chests.] Ḥajj:46 We seek refuge in Allah from the blindness…
