What About Women?

May 8, 2018

Reading my notes on ʿulūm Al-Qurʾān, I came across the following under the study of reasons of revelation and it made me smile.

Um Salamah said to the Messenger ﷺ: “O Rasūl Allāh, I have not heard Allāh mention anything about women and migration.”

So Allāh revealed: ❰So their Lord responded to them: “I will never deny any of you—male or female—the reward of your deeds. Both are equal in reward. Those who migrated or were expelled from their homes, and were persecuted for My sake and fought and ˹some˺ were martyred—I will certainly forgive their sins and admit them into Gardens under which rivers flow, as a reward from Allah. And with Allah is the finest reward!”❱

In another wording of the narration: Um Salamah said, “O Rasūl Allāh ﷺ: You speak about men but you don’t speak about women.”
So Allāh revealed: ❰Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so – for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.❱

A sincere, pure heart that wanted to know what Allāh, the Loving, Kind Rabb said about women. It wasn’t competitiveness or resentfulness or delusion, but simply a pure desire to be close to Allāh that lead to this question.

In yet another narration, Um Salamah is recorded to have said: “Men go to war [thereby earn the noble rewards promised], but women don’t…”

So Allāh revealed: ❰And do not wish for what Allah has given some of you over others. Men will be rewarded according to their deeds and women ˹equally˺ according to theirs. Rather, ask Allah for His bounties. Surely Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things.❱

Thereafter it was simply: We hear and we obey. Just as it should be.
