To teach us, to purify us, to raise our ranks and for many other reasons that our minds cannot fathom, Allāh ﷻ sends us tests that often shock us. Allāh tests us to see how we think, how we react, how we behave and how we interact with what is happening.
For the reasons listed above and the many more reasons that are beyond us, these tests are a blessing.
Often people do not see them as a blessing. Often people’s thoughts become muddled, so they do not think clearly and they do not reason clearly.
Often, we find that people’s worst traits come to the surface when tested.
Allāh tests us to see what our hearts hold, even though He knows exactly what is inside each and everyone one of us—yet He tests.
Allāh says in the Qurʾān, ❰Alif Lām Mīm • Do people think they will be left alone after saying ‘We believe’ without being put to the test? • We tested those who went before them: God will certainly know [mark out] which ones are truthful and which are lying.❱
This test is not to show Him for He knows. This test is to show us.
In another place in the Qurʾān, Allāh informs us of what truly benefits a person on the Day of Judgement. He says that it’s not wealth nor children but it is, ❰the one who reaches Allāh with a sound heart.❱
When we are tested, whatever we concealed in our hearts comes to the surface. Whatever bitterness, hatred, animosity, jealousy, belief… all come bubbling upward.
When these ailments come to the surface a person is able to correct them should he be perceptive, and in the process, he’s able to reach a state where he has a pure heart when he meets Allāh ﷻ, and This is a blessing.
