Sins prevent goodness from Allāh. Goodness in the form of material blessings and in the form of spiritual ones, like understanding of the Qurʾān, humility in prayer and high attainment in periods of mercy, like the month Ramaḍān.
When people enter the blessed month of Ramaḍān with high hopes for themselves and achieve only a little, more often than not, it is their sins preventing them from success.
This is why scholars advise that to prepare for a month like Ramaḍān (or a journey like Ḥajj and ʿumrah) one should increasingly seek forgiveness from Allāh for what they have incurred knowingly and unknowingly in hopes to gain a good share of the blessings of this month and of their journey.
May Allāh forgive our sins and shortcomings and grant us lofty stations in the approaching month of Ramaḍān.
