QURʾĀNIC REFLECTIONS

Qurʾānic Reflections

“If it wasn’t for his hope (in Allāh) of receiving an answer, he would have never asked.”

April 8, 2015

When the disbeliever sees the wrath and punishment that awaits him in his life after death – from his
place in Hellfire, to the angels of punishment — he will make a duʿāʾ related
in the following āyāt:

Until, when death comes to
one of them [the disbelievers], he says, “My Lord, send me back
That I might do righteousness in that which I left behind.” No! It is only
a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are
resurrected.﴿
al-Muʾminūn:99-100

He will beg Allāh to be returned to this life for another chance
at doing good that might protect him from the horrors he is witnessing. But of
course it will be too late then.

What struck me most is what scholars say: If it wasn’t for his
hope (in Allāh) of receiving an answer, he would have never asked.

Why then do *we* lose hope in asking Him? When every breath we
take is simply an extension of our time here to repent and do good.
