Have You Abandoned the Qurʾān?

October 13, 2014

On the Day of Judgment, our beloved Prophet ﷺ will put forward a complain to Allāh, the Lord of the Worlds. He ﷺ will complain against all those who abandoned the Qurʾān. And what fate do you think awaits those whom the Prophet complains against?!

And the Messenger has said, “O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qurʾān as [a thing] abandoned.”﴿

Al-ʿAllāmah Moḥammed b. Mukhtār ash-Shanqīṭī was asked the following question,
“Days pass by and I do not recite the Qurʾān, is this considered abandonment of the Qurʾān?”

He answered,
❝This is considered a deprivation! And what a deprivation it is!
If you find that days have passed and you have not recited anything from the Qurʾān, then weep over yourself. By Allāh a person is not deprived of performing an act of worship except it is an indication that they have become distant from Allāh.

Sufyān ath-Thawrī said, “I once committed a sin, and because of that sin I was unable to perform the night prayer for six months.”

So if you find days pass by and you do not recite anything of the Qurʾān then weep over yourself and ask Allāh for ʿĀfīyah (to keep you safe and sound).

Turn to Allāh repentant and seeking forgiveness. For this is only because of a sin between you and Allāh.❞ [Audio of fatwa available online.]

What makes our situation worse is how easily and readily we have available copies and recitations of the Qurʾān, but look how distant we are from it! May Allāh help us.
