Lessons in Being a Good Friend

November 2, 2012

The topic of companionship is one of the many topics discussed in surah al Kahaf.

The first case is of the Youth of the Cave. Their story tells us how a group of friends consoled and supported each other during a turbulent phase that tested their īmān.

The second is of two companions. One who Allah had blessed with wordly pleasures: two great gardens with rivers, luscious greenery, the works.  The other companion, not so much.

In the verses of surah al-Kahaf we are given a peek into a conversation between the latter of the aforementioned companions.

The owner of the gardens says something cruel to his companion, and to add salt to the wound, it as if he knows that it will hurt but he says it anyway.

[..So he (owner of the gardens) said to his companion while he was conversing with him, “I am greater than you in wealth and mightier in numbers of men.”] Kahaf:34

A snide remark, was it not? Something that would make us too insulted for words. But what does his companion reply?

[His companion said to him while he was conversing with him, “Have you disbelieved in He who created you from dust and then from a sperm-drop and then proportioned you as a man?

But as for me, He is Allah , my Lord, and I do not associate with my Lord anyone.

It was better for you to say, when you entered your garden: "That which Allah wills (will come to pass)! There is no power but with Allah”.]

Look how the righteous of the two companions reacts, he reminds his friend of Allah. And he reminds himself that what he has (guidance) is MUCH better than any amount of worldly wealth.

And this is a lesson for us. Be the better friend, the righteous one. Remind them of Allah when they remind you of all that you gave up for Allah.
